Nitin Sawhney : "Sunset Remixes" : V2
(VVR5016766)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 5/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Tight
Format: 12"
What can I say, its another huge MJ Cole tune. Save this one for
that sunrise set you've been planning. When you hear MJ working
this one you'll wonder how it could have been done any other way.
Fresh vocals, strings and guitar samples take you on a ride.

Tony Momrelle vs Daryl B & BKT : "If You Were Here Tonight Remixes" : Break the Barrier
(BTB002)

Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 5/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: The Boy's Turn
Format: 12"
Another remix from Daryl B on the 5 track single, all variations on a
theme with a couple garrige mixes and a couple of 4/4 joints. My
favorite is the rnb pressure on A1 with the big bass sound and
tight snappy drums. Smooth like chocolate, boy.

Mark J feat MC Eveready : "Fire" : white
(MARK003)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Oct 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Jumpup Garage
Summary: Lock & Load
Format: 12"
This third tune by Mark J of Mark's Classics is his best one yet.
A wicked bouncing flow breaks down into halftime ragga business and
then brings the energy right back up. Tight, crisp production on
this one. I would have guessed it was on Kronik!

Ladies First : "Messin Remixes" : Polydor
(LADIES4)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 3/5
Booty Factor: 4/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Go Girl!
Format: 12"
Wicked remix by the Sovereign on one side with a long build and
tight production as usual. Like his other tunes it has a soulful
vibe but it still manages to be quite uptempo. On the flip is
an Oris Jay remix that sounds like "Brand Nu Flava" sped up.

DJ Daryl B : "I Just Can't" : Trick Records
(TRK008)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 3/5
Pressing: 3/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Garage
Summary: Must Go On
Format: 12"
Starting on the A side we have a good 4/4 mix that will please the
househeads out there and is fast enough to mix in well. On the flip
is a 2 step vocal and dub mix, a very nice shuffling beat with some
reversed samples are a nice counterpoint to the female vocals.
Sounds almost like something you would hear on Shelflife or Tempa.

Summary: Oooh Yeah
Format: 12"
Another sugar sweet vocal mix with heavyweight bass on this single
track vinyl, with a little MC work thrown in for good measure. Nice
to see DND back in the saddle!

Bump 'N Flex : "Promises" : Urban Heat Promo
(UHT005)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 5/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 5/5

Summary: Feel the Heat
Format: 12"
What a tune by the Bump & Flex!!! The Club Mix is a full booty
assult with wicked rolling bassline and sweet dont-want-no-playa lyrics
- easy to picture jamming out in the Bimmer with a pirate station on
10. Top marks for this one!! Similar sound to Jam & Face productions.
The Hard Step Dub on the flip doesn't do anything too interesting, but
who cares?

Artful Dodget feat Melanie Blatt & Miss Shorte-E : "Twentyfourseven" : Public Demand Promo

Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 4/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Ladies First
Format: 12"
Another smooth club and radio hit from the Artful Dodger, its
hard not to like this tune. If you like Mis Teeq or B15 Project
then you'll want to pick this up. Definately one that will get
the girls on the floor. I prefer the Dubaholics mix on the flip,
these guys are hot hot hot. Expect to be hearing this one for
a long time to come.

Blackout : "Get Up" : Independiente
(GETUP3)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Sep 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 3/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Catchy
Format: 12"
Great tune this one, with nicely layered female vocal samples ("gotta get
up to get down") and quality MC work inbetween. Pretty uptempo but
could also be worked into a lounge set. Quick mixing with this one,
it keeps pretty busy without any long breakdowns. Someone told me
this was a Sovereign production in disguise but I'm not totally sure
about that. Makes a great intro tune.

Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Good stuff
Format: 12"
This single has a remix by TJ Cases on one side, a more DJ friendly
mix than the original, featuring good MC work. Nice mellow garage
sound. On the flip there's a Big Shot remix with a more minimal
bassline sound. Another solid release on Cut & Play.

Release Date: Jul 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 4/5
Style: Club Garage
Summary: Nice One Matt
Format: 2x12"
This double-pack contains remixes by MJ Cole and David Morales, but
of course its the Matt J relick that I bought it for. What can I
say, you know an MJ Cole track the moment you hear it, and somehow
he keeps it original and tight as hell. Probably the classiest
Mariah tune you will ever hear. Thank God it doesn't have any of
that high-register wailing she usually does!

Release Date: Mar 2001
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 2/5

Summary: Yup it does
Format: 12"
Features a stripped down garage track complete with rolling bassline,
melancholy vocals and harpsichord stabs. Great tune for bringing it
down a notch. Look out for this label!

Wookie : "Storm" : Manchu
(MCR002)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Mar 2001
Overall: 3/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 2/5
Style: Dark Garage
Summary: Bad day?
Format: 12"
Wookie gets in touch with his dark side on his new imprint Manchu
here. Pardon the pun, but its a stormer... tight production and
an unrelenting bassline, this one was on all the charts. Not every
Wookie tune is totally original though, compare this to the
"Dirty Beats" or "Little Man" remixes and you will probably decide
you only need one of the three. The lack of any vocals makes this
one a little less popular with the ladies.

DJ Narrows : "Saved Soul/Burning Up" : Ressurection
(CH001)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Jun 2001
Overall: 3/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 2/5
Style: Dark 4/4
Summary: Creepy!
Format: 12"
The big debut tune for DJ Narrows, EZ caned this one and it seems
to have started a whole subgenre of fast 4/4 garage tunes with
spooky samples and growly acid noises. Definately an original sound.
On the flip is a good tune with a happier vibe that might be easier
for some people to deal with.

Todd Edwards : "Show Me A Sign" : I Records
(IR-189)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Aug 2000
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 3/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Todd Edwards
Summary: Roots Music
Format: 12"
Todd's in fine form on this one, his trademark crunchy house beats
start off all disjointed and weird but by the breakdown its managed
to sort itself into quite a nice tune. Somehow he manages to make
intelligent tracks that are also very danceable - works for me.

Release Date: 1999
Overall: 3/5

Style: Mellow
Summary: But it's OK
Format: 12"
Marvel & Eily roll out another quality remixes, blending vocals with
a smooth organ sound and enough samples and changes to keep things
interesting. Excellent tune for a laid-back vibe. Unfortunately the
"It's Not Right But It's Okay" remix on the B side falls a bit short of
the mark.

Summary: Soft Sell
Format: 12"
This release of the now-classic "Joy" features three MC mixes on the
A side, and a dub and another mix on the flip. This is a tune
everyone can love, between the Tainted Love samples and heavy bassline
it never fails to pack the floor. oi oi, oi oi!

DND : "DND Vol 5" : DND
(DND005)
Reviewed By: Merlin
Release Date: Unknown
Overall: 4/5
Pressing: 4/5
Booty Factor: 3/5
Style: Anthem
Summary: Play Loud
Format: 12"
Picked up this classic by DND recently, seriously soulful vocals float
over a heavy heavy bassline and crunchy drum sounds. Are we peaking
yet? How did they get the bells to sound like that? "I've Got" [What
You've Been Looking For] is the tune to get, the flip "Keep On" is
mildly amusing but hasn't survived as well.
